For the 2018 season we will offer 2 share options: A basic share for $525 and a premium share at $675. The premium share will be essentially the same as the share that we have offered during previous years. The Basic share will be a smaller share, approximately three-fourth the size of the premium share.
The basic share will contain on average 8 to 9 items and will include more common produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, potatoes cucumbers etc. There will be smaller quantities of some items, for example perhaps 3 instead of 4 of crops such as peppers, eggplant, squash and cucumbers.
Premium share will on average contain 12 to 13 items. There will be more variety and, in some cases, larger quantities of products such as peas and beans in the premium share. There will be more greens in the premium, for example--perhaps two bunches of spinach instead of one--and a greens item during mid-summer when these are scarce. There may be a few items that are only provided in the premium share. While herbs will be included in the basic share, they will be provided more consistently in the premium share.
For those groups that trialed the two-share-level program last season, it seems to have worked out OK with very few glitches. However, it will still be at the discretion of each group as to whether to offer the smaller basic share or only the full price premium share. I am open to any ideas or suggestions regarding offering a payment plan, so that members will not need to pay the full amount at time of registration. This seems to be one of the impediments to increasing membership.
The season will, as always, last for 24 weeks. I expect deliveries to begin the week of June 3 and end on the week of November 11, the week before Thanksgiving week. I anticipate offering a stock up share at the end of the season but that will be decided along with the pricing in late October.
I anticipate offering a 12- to 14-week fruit share at $15 a week but that decision will be made in late May once I have a better idea how local fruit crops have endured the uncertain spring weather (i.e. late frosts).
We will offer a $25 “early bird” discount for members who enroll and make payment in full by March 12.
We will also continue to offer egg shares. Information will be provided on this in the early spring.
Thank you all for all that you do for the farm and your communities. I look forward to your feedback and addressing your concerns. I hope to continue the conversation with all of you in addressing the decline in membership and finding solutions to the various impediments which prevent participation in a CSA program.
Here’s to a great 2018 season!
